Bringing together ministries to youth, families, parish support, and communications, the evangelisation office seeks to support the encounter with Christ in the midst of the Church. About the Role The primary purpose of the Community Engagement Officer is to support parish renewal by designing and leading processes of community engagement and facilitation in alignment with the Archdiocesan Mission Plan. This includes driving community engagement with the Archdiocesan Mission Plan, facilitating dialogue and collaboration between communities in preparation for and implementation of partnership, assisting parish leaders in community meetings and workshops, and driving communications surrounding the Archdiocesan Mission Plan by sharing information and responding to community feedback, queries and concerns from individuals and communities. In supporting the process of parish renewal, the role works under the direction of the Parish Renewal Implementation Manager and as part of the Parish Renewal Team. Responsibilities The primary duties of the Community Engagement Officer will include but not limited to the following: • Assist parish leaders in community meetings, workshops and dialogue associated with the Archdiocesan Mission Plan, to engage with its vision and priorities; • Assist parish priests, leadership teams and communities to reflect upon their identity as a parish in a new pastoral landscape, create a vision for their parish’s mission into the future, and adopt strategies to implement that vision including the possibilities for structural renewal such as parish partnerships. • Create opportunities to help parish leaders foster a culture of creativity and adaptation to new pastoral challenges, and empower communities to develop and embrace a vision of a flourishing parish life that is faithful to Christ’s mission. • Assist in the design and implementation of a rigorous process of parish self-assessment according to the priorities of the Archdiocesan Mission Plan, and a strategy and schedule for parish engagement with this process by region, as well as associated processes of feedback from the Archdiocese and follow up for support; • Together with the Parish Renewal Implementation Manager, assist to design, prepare and coordinate a structured and stepwise process for the transition of parishes in poor health to partnership or merger, including anticipated timelines for change; • Facilitate dialogue and collaboration between communities in preparation for and implementation of parish partnerships, identifying, engaging and supporting key stakeholders to advance this process; • Develop a procedure through which parishes, individuals and communities can provide feedback on the Archdiocesan Mission Plan and partnership process, with regular report of feedback to the Parish Renewal Implementation Manager; • Identify stakeholders and stakeholder issues in relation to parish structural renewal; and • Oversee processes of mediation to assist communities in difficult situations by bringing parties together, to find common ground and build mutually beneficial resolutions. Selection Criteria The ideal candidate should satisfy the following selection criteria: • Demonstrated commitment to the ethos, teachings and values of the Catholic Church; • Excellent people skills and capability for relationship building, including effectively leading a team under the direction of the Director of the Sydney Centre for Evangelisation; • The capacity to deal sensitively and intelligently with difficult issues; • Strong written and oral communication skills; • A professional manner and presentation; • A strong commitment to ongoing learning and the development of self, others and the Catholic faith; • Excellent attention to detail and a well ordered approach to work; • Demonstrated organisation skills, including the ability to balance competing priorities, delegate work effectively and meet conflicting deadlines; • Degree in a relevant discipline, e.g. Facilitation, Community Engagement, Pastoral Care, Teaching, Change Management or equivalent skills and experience in a similar role or in a role encompassing the key areas of competency for this position; • Knowledge of the teachings of the Catholic Church, including an understanding of parish life and community engagement; • An understanding of and ability to work with parish priests, parish communities and communities of varied religious, ethnic, educational and social backgrounds; • Proven ability to collaborate within a team under broad direction and commitment to continuing professional development; • A demonstrated track record of coordinating processes of change and community engagement, ideally within the Catholic faith community; and • Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office applications – Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Publisher – and social media technologies.
