catholicweekly.com.au 2 NEWS 15, August, 2021 CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 “As I have visited schools dur- ing parish visitations, I have been delighted to hear from some of you personally, or from the leaders of school and parish, of your very help- ful work, encouraging fami- lies to engage with their faith through Masses and in vari- ous other ways. Archbishop Fisher told the Family Educators that their calling as missionary inten- tional disciples has become particularly important dur- ing the COVID-19 lockdown, when many families are looking to nurture their faith through challenging times. “Your focus on the domes- tic church is more important than ever under COVID, as the Church and school that You are vital in faith role begins in the home has now returned to the home for the time being”, he added. The Archbishop singled out the Family Educator’s cur- rent program, Be a Light in Lockdown as a good example of this missionary outreach. Family Educators have been making weekly phone-calls to check in with families, digital prayer resources have been shared for children, reflect- ing on the Sunday Gospel and online Lectio Divina sessions Deepening faith in schools: a growing number of Family Educators, such as this group photographed in June, are trained to offer forma- tion programmes for parents in basic Christian faith - such as the Alpha course. A family educator for the past three years at St Charles Borromeo primary school in Ryde, Mrs Phillipa Manley, said Archbishop Fisher’s pres- entation helped to strengthen her mission and resolve to go out and make disciples within her school community. “We have started an on- line Alpha program during the lockdown and through that program, I have definite- ly come to appreciate more that family educators can be powerful role models of faith in the family setting in a way which is very distinct from that of the religious education teacher in the classroom”, she said. FellowFamily Educator, Mrs Melina Cansino from St Cathe- rine of Siena primary, Prestons said she came away from the Archbishop’s presentationwith a much deeper appreciation of how important family educa- tors are in the Sydney Catholic community. “Since we often tend to have school-aged children ourselves, this can help us more easily relate to the day to day challenges families are facing and in so doing, help us become tangible role models in the faith to our parents”.
