In his opening address Archbishop Costelloe warned against turning the Plenary Council into a factional battle- field, tellingmembers they are “not enemies or combatants seeking to prevail over others”. “Although each of us be- longs to one or other com- munities of faith and mission, we are not here as representa- tives or spokespersons of any particular community, tasked with advocating for any par- ticular interest group,” he said. He added a further cau- tionary note for members who wished to see certain outcomes achieved by the close of the second assembly. “Cherished hopes, dreams and projects may not have been realised, or not in the way we had hoped and presumed had been the case,” he said. “For each of us as indi- viduals, and each of us as members of a variety of com- munities within the Church, who knows what the Plenary Council may be asking us to Plenary President sets out key priorities awaiting members The challenge we set ourselves let go of, or asking us to em- brace? “Who knows what might have to die in order to for something new to spring to life?” Archbishop Costelloe Archhbishop Timothy Costelloe SDB addresses members on the first day of business for the Plenary Council’s Second Assembly.
