Shining Path’s brutal, charismatic leader dead, 86 ABIMAEL GUZMÁN, founder of Peru’s violent Shining Path insurgency, died in his pris- on cell on 11 September. He was 86. Guzmán, (pictured) a phi- losophy professor turned guerrilla leader, launched the outlawed party’s war on the Peruvian state in 1980. The first armed action was burn- ing ballot boxes in a remote A n d e a n village in May of that year, coin- ciding with the first pres iden- tial election after 12 years of military rule. Guzmán was arrested in September 1992 and was serv- ing two life sentences. Shining Path was brutal, razing en- tire villages as part Guzmán’s messianic vision and the cult- like following he demanded. The group was responsi- ble directly or indirectly for the bulk of the nearly 70,000 people killed or disappeared during the internal conflict, according to the country’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s report in 2004. “Abimael Guzmán was Peru’s most-hated man, much like Osama Bin Laden in the US. His brand of bellicose Marxist orthodoxy became increas- ingly anachronistic in the new 21st-century world,” said Orin Starn, an academic and co-author of recent book, The Shining Path: Love, Madness, and Revolution in the Andes . - CNS
