$2 SYDNEY’S STMary’s Cathedral has been named by Pope Fran- cis as one of 30 Marian Shrines around the world to participate in a Rosary Marathon to help end the Coronavirus pandem- ic.ThroughoutMay, the shrines are encouraged to seek the par- ticipation of the local popula- tion to devote a different prayer intention related to COVID-19 andwill be on all Vaticanmedia platforms. Sydneysiders have been encouraged to come to- gether inprayer at StMary’s Ca- thedral on 16May at 6pmAEST. Dean of the Cathedral Fr Don Richardson said it was a huge honour to be recognised as the “principal Marian Shrine in this part of the world” and reinforces its status as the main Church dedicated to our Lady in this country. “Obviously the prayer in- tentions specifically for an end to the pandemic are very im- portant and something dear to everyone’s hearts especially as we see what’s going on in the rest of the world,” he said. “It really is a great honour and just goes to cement the significance of St Mary’s Cathe- dral which naturally makes the dean feel rather proud.” After more than a year, and with the world still in the grips of the pandemic, the Pope and the Church around the world is once again leading the way in imploring God for an end to the suffering. “It is the deep de- sire of the Holy Father that the month of May be dedicated to a prayer marathon conducted by Catholics across the globe to become “vehicles of the prayer of the entire Church,” said the Pontifical Council for Promot- ing New Evangelisation. Starting on 1 May and broadcast live from the Grego- rian Chapel of St Peter’s Basili- ca, the Holy Father led the Ro- sary and blessed Rosaries to be sent to the 30 Marian Shrines participating in the daily live- streamed prayers. Together with the Holy Ro- sary, every day of the month is characterised by a prayer inten- tion for people most affected by the plight of the pandemic including the deceased, those infected with the virus, those who have not been able to say goodbye to their loved ones, the homeless, doctors, nurses, pharmacists and health care personnel. Sydneysiders have been asked to come together on 16May and pray not only for an end to COVID but also for all victims of violence and human trafficking. Sydney Archdioce- sanAnti-SlaveryTaskforceChair John McCarthy QC told The Catholic Weekly he was hon- oured by the pope’s decision to select StMary’s Cathedral. The father of three can think of no better grounding for his family’s future than the Gospel message and the Catholic Church’s time-hon- oured wisdom. Henry helped to design the pavement (including for the local roads, bridges and 9km twin tunnels), road signage and tolling gantries for Stage 2 of the Westconnex, linking Beverly Hills to the St Peters Interchange.
